This area of research wouldn’t be nearly as advanced as it is without the scientific studies of Dr. Robert Monroe and those that succeed him at The Monroe Institute. His research, development, experimentation, and documentation of his ground-breaking work in hemispheric synchronization (TMI’s Hemi-Sync) has opened the door for many others to pursue their own experiences. His research, tools, and books have attracted the attention of physicians, engineers, scientists, therapists, and educators. Hemi-Sync has been used for many purposes, including relaxation and sleep induction, learning and memory aids, helping those with physical and mental difficulties, and reaching altered states of consciousness through the use of sound.
Our brains are remarkable instruments that function like a supercomputer, controlling all that we see, hear, and feel, and process this information into chemical and neurological signals that control our bodies in our current physical adventure. Like everything in the Universe, our brains run on certain frequencies to achieve certain functions. These frequencies can be seen and studied through EEG technology. Brainwave entrainment may be achieved when audio signals are introduced to the brain causing a response directly related to the frequency of the signal introduced, called binaural beats. Two tones close in frequency generate a beat frequency at the difference of the frequencies, which is generally subsonic. For example, a 495 Hz tone and 505 Hz tone will produce a subsonic 10 Hz beat, roughly in the middle of the alpha range. This effect is achieved without either ear hearing the pulse when stereo headphones are used. Each ear hears only a steady tone. Instead, the brain produces the pulse by combining the two tones. By allowing the brain to “feel” where the brainwaves can behave at optimal levels, the hope is that the brain becomes familiar with these new frequencies and falls into the new patterns, thereby unlocking the potential hidden in all of us.
| Frequency range | Name | Usually associated with: |
|---|---|---|
| > 40 Hz | Gamma waves | Higher mental activity, including perception, problem solving, and consciousness |
| 13–39 Hz | Beta waves | Active, busy or anxious thinking and active concentration, arousal, and cognition. |
| 7–13 Hz | Alpha waves | Relaxation (while awake), pre-sleep and pre-wake drowsiness, REM sleep, Dreams |
| 4–7 Hz | Theta waves | deep meditation/relaxation, NREM sleep |
| < 4 Hz | Delta waves | Deep dreamless sleep, loss of body awareness |
It is generally accepted that most people function normally in our day-to-day lives, where we are active, busy, concentrating, or thinking, with a brainwave that measures about 20 Hz. This is a Beta wave state, and usually between 13 and 39 Hz is considered common Beta wave. This is the state at which you begin your journey. Any higher than this, above 40 Hz, is the Gamma wave state, which can be used for certain goals such as problem solving, altering perception, or other higher mental activity. Below the Beta wave state, in or around 8-13 Hz, is the Alpha wave state. This is the state at which your brainwaves calm a bit into a relaxed, drowsy state. This state makes assimilating information easier and helps eliminate feelings of stress and anxiety. The theta wave state is next, ranging about 4-7 Hz, and is most commonly visited during REM sleep and deep meditative states. Finally, anything below 4 Hz is considered Delta waves. This is where you enter a state of deep trance state and have loss of body awareness.
Einstein said the theory of relativity came about thanks to synchronicity of the two hemispheres of his brain and the greatest expansion of his faculties.
SoundShift uses binaural beats and specific sounds from nature, Musical Compositions, Ambient Soundscapes, tones from cutting edge musical synthesis as well as ancient musical instruments all tuned specifically to the carrier frequency to create entrainment of natural brainwave states. This technique can induce relaxation, meditative states, creativity, focus, pain control, balance the brain hemispheres, and reach different states of consciousness. Entrainment of the brain can help the listener train brainwaves to function on a higher frequency, preparing them for more enlightened states of being and enabling the brain to develop new abilities and reach for new frequency horizons.
By using the correct binaural beat pattern with the correct frequency, many studies have been performed resulting in an amazing array of results, such as greater focus of attention, stress reduction, enhanced sleep, and pain management.
